"Jeep Cherokee XJ Trouble Shooting - My Jeep won't start! Clear Flood Procedure"
October 16, 2009 by Mike StrawbridgeSometimes an injector will leak or for some other reason,
excess fuel can collect in the intake manifold.
When this happens the Jeep engine will spin over but not fire.
Sometimes it will fire, stumble and then die.
The manufactures prepared for this contingency for adding a
clear flood mode to the engine computer. To
engage this mode you have to pay attention to the position of the accelerator
pedal when you switch on the key and try to start your Jeep.
In order to engage the clear flood mode, press the
accelerator pedal all the way to the floor.
Then, switch on the ignition and attempt to start the vehicle.
Once the engine starts, release the pedal to allow normal operation.
If the engine again fails to start, switch the ignition off
and release the pedal. Try to start
the Jeep normally. If it starts then
stumbles and dies, try the clear flood again or try again with the throttle
closed but open it slightly as soon as it starts to run.
The idle speed control circuit may get a little confused by all this so hold the throttle slightly open until the engine runs smoothly.
